Looking For an RTS Game

Link to this post 02 Jan 10

So, I can learn FPS with MW2, which if there are a "team" of people who actually work together can put SOME strategic elements into play. Also, Left 4 Dead 2 has a GOOD team dynamic built right in. Where I am running into roadblocks (likely due to lack of knowledge) is in terms of Vehicle combat and RTS. Vehicle combat like what will be found in DUST does not seem to exist but, I am wondering if there is a good RTS (Real Time Strategy) game out there that has online multiplayer capability. Basically I am looking for games for the 360 that are good prep for how things will work in DUST. FPS is easy but, the rest is tougher.

For vehicle action like DUST, I would say that Battlefield 2142 (I feel I'm repeating myself here) would be the best option, but it is only on PC. Halo maybe, but the vehicles feel more integral in Battlefield 2142. As for RTS, I would say again, you are going to have to go to the PC. Personally, one of my favourites is World in Conflict - it's awesome. Plus it's loaded to the brim with teamwork, so that gets it another point in my book.

I do keep hearing "You will have to go to the PC". Thats why I asked it here in the Xbox 360 forum. I really don't to game on the PC at this point. Down that road lies trouble like getting back into Eve Online or World of Warcraft. Plus, practicing for a console game on a PC makes very little sense to me. The control is going to be completely different and that is the main aspect I want to practice. Thanks for the tips though, I have paid attention to the Battlefield 2142 suggestion and if it were on the Xbox I would be on it in a blink. What I really want to work on is how to do the RTS and Vehicle combat things on the console. I understand strategy well and have played other incarnations of Battlefield on the PC I just need to get good ont he console.

you can plug in 360 controllers to pcs so you could play a pc game but like a xbox

I was speaking with one of my friends the other day and he brought up a good point. The RTS, MMO, and Vehicle Combat aspects of DUST are in all liklihood going to be completely different than anything else out there anyway so practicing those aspects of the game in other games will do very little good. If it does not do harm. As such I think i will stick with whatever the most popular FPS for the 360 is until DUST comes out. FPS is FPS so training there will be the best thing to do IMO.

Guess we will just have to wait for CCP to (hopefully) release a demo/beta.

Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars
Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3
Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour

I'm sure at least the first two, ad probably the third, are available for the Xbox 360, and they all have online capabilities as far as I know. On PC they do, and probably on console (I only play RTS on PC, so I'm basically reciting what I've gleaned from articles here and there)

CnC Tiberium Wars Takes place in a dystopian semi-distant future, where the planet has been ravaged by the spread of a poisonous, valuable substance called Tiberium, and by the war that has been raging between the Brotherhood of Nod and the Global Defense Initiative. Tanks, infantry, and aircraft are all used, along with stationary weapons structures.

Never actually played RA3, so I won't say anything about it. You can look it up anywhere though.

CnC Generals takes place in modern day, and features a conflict with the Global Liberation Army (a Taliban-esque, well-armed insurgent faction) pitted against the unlikely alliance of China and the US. Once again, infantry, tanks, and aircraft are popular tools, but they look different. Most of the changes between Generals and CnC3 are aesthetic, but there are changes to the mechanics as well.

Anyway, those are the ones I recommend. Anything before that has mediocre graphics and no online.

Im looking forward to the game R.U.S.E, looks pretty damn cool.

I'd recommend Supreme Commander 2 on the Xbox 360.

Do you really need to play an RTS?, RTS's can differ quite wildly as the units aren't being played by real people, with Dust you'll need to know how to get people to follow orders and make sure that squads are unified and following appropriate orders, which isn't such a concern in an RTS.

Mr Alex (or is it MrAlex?) is quite right. Hardest part in Battlefield 2 being the commander is to get your team doing anything.

BF2142 is better, the commander can bombard people who don't listen if FF is on .

The commander can bombard team mates on either (though I do recommend it). But I still agree, BF2142 is better than BF2.

I love moving the Titans next to each other in BF2142 for the epic jump-pod standoff that follows.

If you want a good console RTS go with Halo Wars. It is the best on the console, and is a decent RTS compared to those on PC (plus no worries about APM). Other than that there are no good console RTS. Add me and I will help you through some Wars.

Agreed, Halo Wars is amazing! But C&C for the xbox is pretty good to.

Civilization Revolution is fun to play, not an RTS its a TBS but still cool.

Most definitly my pick would be Halo Wars. It's loads of fun, and vehicular combat is right at the center (I for one, do not use infantry often, unless I need Spartans).

Just make an army of hunters with a couple of reppers floating behind them. Much many Lazors!
