If the engine has just been chosen now, was the original dust demo scripted?
At first I was worried it might be anyway, but this almost cements it.
However, if it was scripted; why would they use such a basic map prototype?

They are quite far along in the development process. They have integrated the new lighting technology into the unreal engine and have probably been using it from the start.
I dont know for sure, but I think the trailer was scripted but used the in game engine. The demo they showed of them actually playing the game at fanfest looked pretty much the same kind of quality as the trailer, just less cinematic.

Thanks, that makes more sense.

Trailer was scripted (as most trailers are).
Demo at fanfest was not. Who sets up a script to crash you into the side of a buiding? <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->

I know the trailer was scripted, but if I were to script gameplay I would add something like that to make it seem more natural.
I would almost bet that they have been using U3 for awhile now (if not from the start) but they wern't/couldn't announce that yet.
For it to have been in development for as long as it has been you would think it was farther along.....I hope to GOD that they really didn't JUST NOW get an engine pinned down.
as for the video.....I would agree it was a scripted cinematic but being run within the engine. The type of movments they have in the video would be crazy to just have open in game to have called up.
Either way....I hope they have more news to come out. I'm trying to find out if the actual announcment is availible somewhere on the webs
EDIT: they would have to have been using U3 this whole time....for the game to have been in development for 3 years and have any moving footage of the in-game assets, 'cause if they were gonna say....design their own....it would have taken 3-4 years alone to do it right before they could start doing any major work to the game itself. without the engine there isn't really a reliable pipeline for the code and art. So I would bet that they had the engine picked out from the start.
EDIT 2: Although I do have one concern.....I know they're showing off Unreal Engine 4....how long after that comes out do games start picking up the new engine tech?? That may make DUST (and a slew of other games) look last gen pretty quick
Id have to say that the Unreal engine was a given, but the engine make wasnt for sure (ie Unreal 3 0r 4), seeing as how they have to get one set of license for one engine over the other. There is also the question of if the lighting effects they love so much would be applicable for unreal 4, we already know that they are for unreal 3, so while they were planning on using the unreal engine im sure they were testing to see if unreal 4 could handle that lighting program that CCP has developed.
I've found some news about Unreal engine upgrades....maybe they affect also Dust ..
