In my humble opinion I hypothesize that they are using both game design (split objectives reducing number of players on a single task) And client/server code design to maximize the number of players on the battlefield. They could be adapting a version of eve's "Dumb Client" and having the server do all the major calculations for the entire field while the client is simply rendering everything. It would make it similar to any game that has hundreds of NPCs on screen. A bad connection will only ruin the game for the guy with the bad connection, because the server itself will be doing the physics simulation.
I hypothesize that it will be a single shard server design due to CCP's love of it[1] along with its link to EVE, and it would have a strong foundation from CCP's CARBON[2] technology. There will be 'instancing' for every battle, thus I presume that every battle will get it's own node on the DUST hardware, smaller battles being load balanced with each other, and monster battles being dedicated.
So May 21st release then?
No, that looks like an internal release that has already occurred.
However, it looks like there is another internal release in September in a few days.
Also, looks like our winter expansion is aimed in November 16th for EVE. <!-- s:mrgreen: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_mrgreen.gif" alt=":mrgreen:" title="Mr. Green" /><!-- s:mrgreen: -->
EDIT: I've just finished having a skim through, that's a good catch there. Couple of hints at other stuff that might be going on behind closed doors...
interesting pdf, thanks for sharing, full image of dust514 (we dont learn much more of it, but nice to see the global darkness feeling of the universe)
I'm keeping my eye out for more details on the vehicle setups - from the trailer and fanfest stuff, it appears there's more than one type of ground assault unit, and we had a flash of a loadout screen similar to that of a ship fitting in EVE. This bodes well for specialized ground units, rather than the 'level to max and be jack of all trades' sort of effect that often happens in FPS games, and makes me wonder how deep into other branches of merc-dom they have gone with the levelling system - will we see demolitions experts? Spec-ops? Support classes?
Too many questions that have no answers right now, doesn't stop me being as excited as a toddler full of coffee

So Leovarian posted a couple of references to this article that's a year old. It caught my interest because of reading info about Homefront be Kaos Studios. So DUST will have per match 'war points' where as Homefront has 'battle points' that are built up per player to purchase vehicles.
Now, I know that in Homefront you can use those BPs for purchasing smaller things, like AA rocket launchers, EMP rockets (I'm guessing), drones, and airstrikes. They appear where you want them, and are put right in the vehicle so someone else can't steal it from you.

Ticking away underneath Homefront's multiplayer are some mechanics that have an impressive impact upon its make-up. It's chiefly the battle points (BP) that make the difference; they're an in-game currency earned in much the same way as you'd rack up XP in other games, with points pouring in for captured bases, kills and headshots.
BP can then be traded for in-game items, from drones through to airstrikes and vehicles from jeeps to through to tanks and much more besides. It makes for a dynamic that Homefront can happily call its own – there's a spend/save mechanic that comes into play as the BP rolls in and you debate whether to call in an airstrike now or hold out and deal out the damage yourself from the controls of an attack helicopter.
For a sense of the scale of Homefront's in-game economy, capturing a base is worth 250 BP while the top tier vehicles come in at around 1400 BP. It's a curve that ensures that Homefront's greatest machinery's within reach of the industrious, and also has an influence on the flow of matches. Battles are first fought with assault rifles and pistols; as it wears on they're fought with rocket launchers and Apache gunships.

not english fluent but from what i have understood nothing news learned here ou of the fact that we will not see anything important like a video or even trailer before 6 months <!-- s:( --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!-- s:( -->
Here's a quick overview of the DUST 514 part:
"large scale fleet battles?" Huh? I think he was dodging a question with that answer.
"FPS with an RTS element to it on very dynamic battlefield. Every battle matters."
Video within the next 6 months? "maybe"
"Probably will be some sort of info" Didn't give a timeframe, but probably within 6 months.
He also said they do 3 month iterations on their development. So there's that.
and seems i have understood too that they dont know (offically) on which platform(s) it will be realeased
