Intresting saying it will not go near 256 players.

At first at least.

Who knows in the future? It may change...

Regardless, I would expect the max player number to increase a fair bit. Maybe not to 256, but maybe to at least 128.

I found this little gem just now. Seems to hint at the answers to a few of the questions we have been tossing around.

So far in this generation, developers have been somewhat hesitant in pushing the player limit for FPS games, some of the most ambitious reaching 64 players (Resistance 2 reached this limit last year). With the release of MAG sometime in q1 2010, a game that can support 256 players, it may be getting safer to say that newer FPS games will have to keep up in pushing the envelope, a trend in which one could easily see Dust reaching 128 - 256 players. Me, though, I'm still enthralled by the Big Team Battle gamemode in Halo 3, which can reach a whooping 16 players per match.

Battlefield 2 (Released 2005) has supported 64 players from day one. However what you say holds true only for consoles. At numbers over 16, I would say a dedicated server is required if you don't wish to eat lag all the time from the host's computer/console having a heart attack.

And with the servers that CCP have (one of the most powerful non-military server clusters in the world I believe), I'm sure they will have no problem serving it.

It's all a matter of efficiency, servers and available bandwidth.

I'm not overly worried about having 256 players in the game. It would be nice to work up to that, but if you only have a single war commander (i.e. the guy in the barge) that's going to be a logistical nightmare for a 128-man team. I would be happy with 32 personally, just as long as there's lots going on.

reading through the links since when did it become free to play?

i would rather pay a one time £50 than pay micro transactions
and i know most fps players will agree ccp DONT RUIN THIS GAME WITH STUPID MARKETING

You will still pay the normal video game price to buy the game. When they are talking about "free to play" they are referring to the online portion. You will not have to pay a monthly fee to have access to the multiplayer online feature but, there will be microtransactions to pay for the server farm they will need to keep the game going. If you want to know more about the Microtransaction aspect there are SEVERAL threads here on the forum that speculate on them.

i know i started the first one

thanks for clearing that up still think micro transactions are the devil

Micro Transaction CAN be the devil. It's all in how thye are handled. I think they are VERY difficult to handle well. I think that they can utterly destroy a game if they are done poorly. I think that CCP needs SOME way to keep thier DUST servers online and Microtransactions are one way to do that, and I think that from what I have heard, read, ect. They will be okay in DUST 514.

Mostly just a reiteration of what we already know and some interesting speculation but, still worth a look.

one of these days i need to sit down and trawl through all the posts picking out all the links to news articles and information and make the "Goldern Thread"

Actually, if anyone wants to give me a hand, that would be great. I'm currently out of town for a week so I won't be able to look much. PM me stuff instead of making a new topic.
