FAQ - Read me before posting
Welcome to the DUST 514.org forum. This forum is a part of an unofficial fan site. We are in no way shape or form run by CCP. There are no developers here to answer your questions or read your rage. The official site run by CCP can be found at http://www.dust514.com.
So since this your first time here, I'll lay out some of the more common questions to save you some effort searching.
First things first. Most content on this forum (and anywhere else on the web) unless otherwise specified is speculation. This includes parts of this post. CCP are (and always have been) very tight lipped as far as information on how the game works.
So far, there are several places you can get impressions of the game. They are:
-
Demo from Fanfest 2009. Remember that this video is pre-alpha, so it's a bit rough around the edges.
-
The EVE Forever trailer from Fanfest 2011, which showcases CCP's vision for what they intend to create with EVE/Incarna and DUST 514. Note that this is primarily created using the respective game engines; it is likely still pre-alpha or alpha and showcases some features that might not be in the first release.
-
The newest video is out of E3 2011 is here, showing some more toys off and the Skyfire Battery.
Now, for the common topics.
Firstly, DUST 514 on PC.
It's not going to happen initially. Don't complain about this. CCP have made it very clear, they want to try tapping into the console market as it's new territory to them, and they think there is potential. Now with them being a professional multi-national game studio, and most of us not having any professional affiliation with the video gaming industry, I think I'll leave that to their judgement. They are the professionals after all. That's not to say it will never come to PC; it's just not on the table right now.
The Release Date
It was announced that there will be a closed beta at the end of 2011, with the full release slated for a summer 2012 release. However, it looks like the beta (called the Private Trials) will take place early 2012, possibly January.
Micro-Transactions
DUST 514 will not be free to acquire. You will have to pay an amount (I'm speculating it will be small, but I have no evidence either way) to get it. However, you start with an equivalent amount of AUR (see below) as the price of the game. Basically, it's a minimum buy in. However, there are no subscription fees, so once you have it, you can keep on making their day for as long as you like for free. They have also stated that all future updates will be free - no messing around with buying DLC packs and such.
The game will mainly be funded though micro-transactions. Basically, what will happen is you buy Aurum (AUR) for real money and then blueprint packs that allow you to create cool stuff™ with AUR.
Don't worry - not everything will be purchased with AUR, and some things are actually only available with ISK (the main in-game currency.) Additionally, anything that can be bought for AUR can be sold on the public marketplace for ISK, meaning it's not exclusive to those who wish to pay extra.
PS3 Exclusivity
It has been announced at E3 2011 that DUST 514 is going to be a PS3 exclusive title. Please don't rage on about this topic. From what we can tell, it seems that Microsoft wouldn't let CCP have the freedom with the game they needed to make the system work. As such they decided to drop the game for Xbox 360 and focus all their attention on the PS3.
Xbox 360 vs PS3 (vs Wii vs PC)
Please do not create new threads about this. Feel free to contribute to the existing topics if you wish, but don't make posts just stating that "x is better than y". All platforms have their merits, so keep it constructive. The minute I see any major arguments on this topic is the minute that discussion on this point is banned. Period.
Now as for any other topic, please look before you post. Many topics have been covered, answering many questions. Of course, use some common sense and don't post in a 9 month old thread just saying "I agree" or "+1". If it doesn't have some serious content, let dead threads be dead. Start a new one. Reference the old one if you feel the need to.
If you have any questions, news or think something else should be added here, just PM PM myself or any of the other admins. You can also catch me on Twitter or in EVE - I'm Grideris.
Now play nice, keep it clean and remember: Only you can prevent Forum fires!
